In today’s newsletter: Trump’s voters are increasingly disagreeing with him on the economy and immigration. US President Benjamin Netanyahu to meet in Florida to discuss Gaza ceasefire and Iran. And NFL division rivals battle for playoff spots.
Here’s what to know today.
What we learned this year about the state of the Trump coalition

The voters who returned President Donald Trump to the White House last year still overwhelmingly support him. But they are increasingly disagreeing with the president on issues like the economy and immigration, raising questions about the strength of their coalition in a midterm election year.

It’s the result of a year of focus group conversations diving into different key groups of Trump’s 2024 support base, which was observed by NBC News.
The groups included more than 50 Black, Hispanic and youth voters who voted for Trump, as well as Republican voters who decided to support the Democrat in this year’s New Jersey and Virginia gubernatorial elections.
These were some consistent themes:
All about economy: Some voters expressed disappointment that the President has not made tackling inflation a higher priority and wanted to see more concrete progress on his pledge to lower prices.
Tariffs divide voters: Some voters hoped that a short period of instability would pay off. Others were worried about uncertainty or harm to businesses and consumers.
Immigration vs Deportation: Most Trump voters were supportive of his measures to crack down on illegal border crossings. But he also believed Trump was not properly prioritizing removing violent criminals over removing undocumented immigrants.
Here’s what else we learned.

Trump and Netanyahu to meet in Florida for crucial talks on Gaza ceasefire and Iran

Trump will meet Benjamin Netanyahu in Florida on Monday and hope to extend the ceasefire he struck in Gaza, while the Israeli prime minister is expected to press for new measures against Iran.
The meeting, which will take place at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, will be Netanyahu’s sixth meeting with a U.S. leader this year and will come a day after the Republican hosted Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky as part of a U.S. effort to negotiate a peace deal with Russia, an official told NBC News.
While Trump works to end the war in Europe, progress in the Middle East has stalled.
An Israel-Hamas ceasefire took effect in October, but local officials say hundreds of people have been killed in the Palestinian territories since that agreement, while Israel accuses Hamas of ceasefire violations.

NFL’s final playoff spots to be decided by winner-take-all matchup

The final two spots in the NFL playoffs will be decided by a pair of winner-take-all games between division rivals in the final week of the regular season.
The winner of the Week 18 matchup of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens will earn the AFC North division title and the AFC’s last postseason berth as the conference’s No. 4 seed.
The game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers will have similar stakes, with the winner claiming the NFC South division crown and earning the final berth in the wild-card round as the NFC’s fourth seed.
Since 2020, the Buccaneers have won nine of their last 11 games against the Panthers. Tampa has won the division each of the last four years – But it’s still anyone’s game.

staff Pick: Senior living community determined to bounce back after Palisades fire

Almost a year ago, I watched my high school burn in the Palisades fire. The fire reduced thousands of buildings to ashes – my friends’ houses, the shops we frequented after the bells rang, and the library where I volunteered.
It also destroyed assisted living facilities and retirement communities where older adults had planned to spend their final years. Hundreds of patients and residents were cut off from essential services. Now, they are determined to return.
Reporter Alicia Lozano captured their hurt feelings and new hope ahead of the one-year anniversary of the tragedy. Rebuilding on burn scars has been slow – I have seen the damage up close. But as one senior resident said, “I believe it is going to be good again.”
