Rollins was shocked when, after his rapid promotion to the main roster, he discovered that the backstage ballgame was largely driven by politics rather than merit.

Rollins reveals the reality of climbing the WWE main roster ladder
WWE’s backstage scenario was discussed very candidly on his podcast with Jay Mohr, and The Visionary said that the ability that was present in his developmental years disappeared when he moved to WWE’s main roster. Rollins indicated that he would have to please a lot of people in order to continue receiving top opportunities in the company.
“It was actually a good exercise in patience for me. I had to wait for two years before I could come to the main roster. So for me, what I had to learn was how to play the political game.

That was the part I had never done…It was a very meritocratic reign on the independent scene to an extent, you know, there’s a little bit of politics you have to play, but if you go out and the crowd responds, you’re going to get more bookings. You are going to get a better situation on the cards. You’re going to make more money, all that good stuff.”
Rollins explains why talent alone wasn’t enough in WWE
Rollins further said that while in WWE, he had to work twice as hard to reach the main event by playing backstage politics.
“But WWE, it’s a different animal and you have to work backstage just like you have to work in the ring. So it doesn’t matter if I was having the best matches on the show or there were a few people behind me.
It mattered only up to a point. I still had to like, I still had to work to give these guys a chance on the big stage.
