Weeks after John Cena’s retirement, a former WWE Champion made fun of CM Punk. Gunther forced John Cena to submit in his retirement match on December 13 at Saturday Night’s Main Event. Since then, The Ring General has made sure that every fan and expert, especially those who were closest to The Cenation Leader, knew about it.
Gunther taunts Cena and makes eye contact with Punk in his Raw debut appearance
In his first Raw appearance after SNME, he proudly revealed that he had Cena tap out like a “little man” and that he had forced the other man to surrender. When he was leaving the venue, John also took a dig at AJ Styles before leaving.
On this week’s Monday Show episode, Gunther again said the same thing, but this time he was interrupted by World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk, who is also a former rival and close friend of Cena. Neither of them said anything to each other, but the tension was clearly visible as they stared at each other, indicating a possible fight in the future.
Gunther sent message after Raw’s confrontation with Punk
As the ring general was leaving the arena, he made a final joke by taunting Cena with “You can’t see me”, laughing, and leaving Punk in the ring. In a recent Instagram post, Gunther celebrated the brief encounter by sharing a photo of himself and CM Punk in the ring, taunting The Cenation Leader, and used just one word caption to express his feelings.
“Untouchable #Gunther #RingGeneral #WWE,” Gunther wrote on Instagram.
Championship and rivalry marked by tension
This week’s Monday Night Raw wasn’t the first time Punk and Gunther were in the same ring. A few months earlier, the two men had feuded over the World Heavyweight Championship, resulting in The Second City Saint capturing the title from The Ring General, though his possession was short-lived as Seth Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank contract from him. Despite weeks of verbal sparring and rivalry, Punk had nothing but good words for his rival during his guest spot on the Good Guy/Bad Guy Podcast.
CM Punk calls Gunther the face of modern wrestling
The Best in the World really made it clear that Gunther was a top wrestler who did well in the industry, thus, dubbing him a throwback and true wrestler. CM Punk said that Gunther is the face of the current wrestling industry, but could also be successful in the 60s and 70s, adding that The Ring is beyond the General era, which is why Punk sees him as the best at the moment.
