England fast bowler Gus Atkinson has been confirmed to be out of the fifth and final Test of this year’s Ashes series due to a hamstring injury sustained during the fourth Test of this series in Melbourne. Atkinson suffered this injury after performing well with the ball on the second day of the current Test series.
Atkinson began his attack by dismissing night watchman Scott Boland, who edged a ball past wicketkeeper Jamie Smith for six. However, issues began to arise soon after. The fast bowler looked quite uncomfortable while completing his fifth over. He had to leave the field. Scans confirmed that Atkinson had suffered a left hamstring injury and would play no further part in the Sydney match.

At the age of 26, he appeared in three Test matches during the Ashes series and took six wickets, his best performance being 2 for 28 in the Melbourne Test. In addition, he contributed remarkably well with the willow, scoring a total of 73 runs in five innings, his highest being 37 in the First Test in Perth.
Atkinson has become the third England fast bowler to sit out the series. This comes after he was selected in the eleven in place of Joffra Archer for the fourth Test. Initially, Mark Wood withdrew from the tour due to an injury to his left knee in the first Test.

With Atkinson out, the final Test match starting on January 4 in Sydney now hangs in the balance, with Matthew Potts or Matthew Fisher likely to be selected for England.
