New Zealand’s star all-rounder announces retirement from all forms of cricket ahead of T20 World Cup

New Zealand’s star all-rounder Doug Bracewell has officially ended his cricket career by announcing his retirement from all formats on Monday, December 29, according to the ICC. He represented the Black Caps in all formats between 2011 and 2023 – building his reputation as his team’s most reliable seam-bowler.

Bracewell has played 28 Tests, 21 ODIs and 20 T20 matches in his career. He has taken 74 wickets in Tests, 26 wickets in ODIs and 20 wickets in T20Is. With the bat, Doug contributed significant runs – 568 in Tests, 221 in ODIs and 126 in the shortest format.

His last appearance for the Black Caps was in a Test match against Sri Lanka in Wellington in 2023. After which he is facing repeated injury problems which also includes rib problems. After this he has now announced his retirement, ending his time with home team Central Districts.

Bracewell also reflected on his journey and expressed gratitude for the opportunities he has received in his career.

“It has been a proud part of my life, and was my aspiration as a young cricketer. I will always be grateful for the opportunities I have had through cricket, and the chance to play for my country as well as Central Districts during my domestic career. It has been a privilege to play first-class and international cricket, and I am grateful to have played and enjoyed the game as long as I have,” Bracewell said via a statement from Central Districts, according to the ICC website.

The focus of the New Zealand team is now on preparations for the T20 World Cup 2026, their first match in the tournament will be against Afghanistan on 8 February.
