Someone would need a ton of melted butter.
A massive shipment of lobster worth $400,000 was stolen while it was on its way to Costco stores, according to the president of the freight company.
Dylan Rexing, president and chief executive of supply chain company Rexing Companies, said in a statement that he believed the driver was impersonating a legitimate carrier and stealing seafood. The lobsters, which did not survive, were headed to Costco stores in Illinois and Minnesota, he said.
“This theft was not accidental,” Rexing said. “This follows a pattern we are seeing more and more, where criminals impersonate legitimate carriers using fake emails and burner phones to hijack high-value cargo in transit.”
“For a medium-sized brokerage like ours, a $400,000 loss is significant,” he said. “This forces tough decisions to be made and ultimately increases costs in the supply chain – consumers ultimately pay.”
Costco did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
“Pimps are on the front lines of this problem, but we need federal agencies to have modern enforcement tools to keep pace with organized criminal networks,” he said. “Until that happens, these thefts will continue to disrupt businesses and impact everyday prices.”
