Supreme Court rejects Trump’s bid to deploy National Guard in Illinois

The Supreme Court rejected the Trump administration’s plan to deploy National Guard troops to Illinois amid strong objections from local officials.

The court, in an unsigned order, rejected an emergency request made by the administration that troops be needed to protect federal agents involved in immigration enforcement in the Chicago area.

Although this decision is preliminary and only involves Chicago, it will likely pose similar challenges to National Guard deployments in other cities, with the opinion setting significant new limits on the President’s ability to do so.

The decision marked a rare defeat for President Donald Trump at the Supreme Court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, after the administration scored a series of high-profile victories this year.

The Court rejected the administration’s view that the situation on the ground is so chaotic that it justifies invoking a federal law that allows the President to call National Guard troops into federal service in extreme situations.

The decision split the court’s six conservative justices, with three in the majority and three dissenting. The three liberals on the court were in the majority. Dissenting were Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch.

National redistricting fight will extend into 2026

The 2026 midterm elections are approaching, but for some states, their congressional boundary lines are far from settled.

After six states implemented new congressional maps this year, a few others could join the fray next year in a mid-decade redistricting battle that could help determine which party controls the House. Redrawing of district lines typically occurs at the beginning of each decade following new census results.

Trump launched an unusually frenetic midcycle redistricting fight when he called on Republican-controlled states across the country to draw new maps to strengthen the GOP’s narrow House majority. Texas, Missouri and North Carolina all drew new maps, giving a total of seven seats to Republicans. But Republicans were not able to achieve as strong a gain as they initially hoped. California Democrats responded with a map, approved by voters last month, that could allow the party to gain up to five seats and effectively cancel the Texas effort.

Experts who supported ‘shaken baby’ science reverse their stance

Brian Birx and Danielle Villasana for NBC News

Thousands of caregivers have been arrested since the early 1980s based on the medical belief that young children admitted to hospital with three symptoms – swelling in the brain, bleeding in the brain and bleeding behind the eyes – may have been forcefully and deliberately shaken. Many doctors and pediatric associations hold to the idea that these symptoms help prove that a child has suffered what is now often called “abusive head trauma.”

But a growing number of medical and forensic experts say the diagnosis is too certain, especially in the absence of other signs of abuse. An accidental fall from a changing table can also cause a similar shock to the brain. Blood clotting disorders and other diseases can also cause brain hemorrhage. While some babies undoubtedly get shaken by excessive caregivers, which can cause life-threatening brain damage, some scientists say seeing just three symptoms isn’t enough before drawing conclusions.

In a major victory for shaken baby syndrome skeptics, the New Jersey Supreme Court recently agreed to affirm a lower court ruling that compared the diagnosis to unreliable “junk science” and barred expert testimony about it from two upcoming trials. The 6-1 decision, which is being closely watched by accused caregivers and their lawyers across the country, could change how courts weigh broken evidence.
