The Ashes nightmare against England has once again thrown a flood of uncomfortable questions at the cricket world. Having gone 0-3 against Australia, with England having already lost the Ashes, and still having two Tests left, the real threat now lurks in the form of a humiliating whitewash.
Unsurprisingly, captain Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum have been in the headlines, with their much-publicized “baseball” approach.
McCullum and Stokes under pressure after defeat in Ashes
England were hoping to rewrite history with their aggressive brand of cricket, but the reality hit hard. Baseball, which enjoyed quick success early in McCollum’s tenure, has struggled against a disciplined Australian organization that knows these conditions inside out. Tactical decisions, shot selection and bowling plans – everything is under scrutiny as England have failed to find consistency throughout the season.
Ben Stokes’ captaincy has come under scrutiny, especially his on-field tactics and how he handles pressure moments. While England have been able to play without fear on their own pitches, the same approach has been considered risky, even reckless, on Australian soil.
The rise and recent stagnation of baseball
Brendon McCullum was appointed England’s Test head coach in May 2022 following the 0-4 Ashes defeat in Australia. His partnership with Stokes initially changed the mentality of the team, with England winning 10 of their first 11 Test matches, playing some attacking cricket to re-energize the fans and players.
However, that momentum has not been maintained. Under McCullum, England are set to achieve big wins in a five-match Test series over Australia or India, possibly the two biggest benchmarks in world cricket. This Ashes scoreline has raised fears that buzzball may not be the solution to all situations, especially in difficult away conditions.
Monty Panesar has a bold choice
Amidst the growing debate over McCullum’s future, former England spinner Monty Panesar has thrown a big name into the conversation. Speaking on a YouTube channel, Panesar said that Ravi Shastri could be the next head coach of England.
Panesar is clearly one of those people who takes no issue with his argument. “You have to think about who knows how to beat Australia,” he said. “Who knows how to exploit their weaknesses in the mental, physical and tactical department? In my opinion, Ravi Shastri should be the next head coach of England.”
It’s hard to ignore his credentials.
Under his leadership, India defeated Australia twice in their den to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2018-19 and again in 2020-21. The latter series, in particular, is remembered for the extraordinary comeback that India made after being bowled out for 36, then despite injuries and adverse conditions, to create history.
McCullum reacts to growing uncertainty
And even though the players’ public support means a lot, McCullum has since said that he intends to continue in his role, but he also said that the future is no longer entirely in his hands. His contract with the ECB runs until the 2027 ODI World Cup and also includes the home Ashes series that year.
McCullum struck a reflective tone while speaking to reporters in Melbourne. “I don’t know. This decision is out of my hands,” he said. “I’ll just keep doing my job, learn from my mistakes and try to get better. Those questions are for someone else.”
Later he said that this had not diminished his enthusiasm. For McCullum, it has always been about coaching the team on the journey, playing exciting cricket and pushing the players to their full potential.
